Professional development for community and economic development practitioners

The London Academy programme of professional development learning events is designed for people working in community development or economic development. Each learning event takes place in London over 3 days and 2 nights, with a full programme of speakers, discussions and visits. The final day is devoted to enjoying London. The events are run from Wednesday to Friday and the delegate’s fee includes 2 nights stay at a 3 star hotel, all meals and local travel.


Strengthening the Social Economy

This learning event examines different aspects of the social economy, including social enterprises, co-operatives, trading activities of NGOs, and the social contribution of the private sector. The event includes visits to successful social enterprises in London and expert speakers on the social economy.

Encouraging Enterprise in Deprived Areas

This learning event looks at what actions can be taken at local level to create jobs by stimulating local enterprise start up and growth, particularly in deprived areas and amongst people who face disadvantage. The event includes visits to business start up centres in some of London’s most deprived areas.

Supporting Labour Market Integration of the ‘Hard to Reach’

This learning event looks at how to support ‘hard to reach’ people into the labour market, including homeless people, ex-offenders, migrants, Roma, gypsies and travellers, older people and lone parents, and how employers can be encouraged to recruit from these groups.

Spanish visit to catering companies

APRODISCA delivers innovative employment and enterprise programmes for people with learning disabilities in Catalonia. The London Academy organised a study visit for a delegation from APRODISCA to learn more about running healthy eating initiatives through commercial catering services. Their study tour included visits to Garden Organic, Kew Gardens, Gazebo Fine Foods, Whole Food Market, and Fortnum & Mason.

Romanian young leaders

Future young diplomats from Romania being prepared for roles in international diplomacy visited the London Academy to meet young Londoners with interests in politics and diplomacy. The study visit was organised as part of the Academy’s mission to promote international understanding, networking and co-operation on economic, social and community development issues.

Swedish business development

A Swedish delegation from Södertälje visited the London Academy to learn more about business development and economic regeneration. Södertälje is a leading industrial centre in Sweden and the hub for Stockholm’s manufacturing industry. The London Academy arranged for the delegation to meet food manufacturers and new business start ups in Wembley and a visit to Acton to learn more about social enterprise and community initiatives.
